Centre Hastings Fire Department : Chimney Fire Prevention Tips (Fall 2025 - Winter 2026)
As we head into another heating season, the Centre Hastings Fire Department reminds residents to stay warm — and stay safe. Chimney fires remain a leading cause of residential fires during the winter months, but they’re also one of the most preventable.
Follow these safety tips to protect your home and family:
1. Book Your Annual Chimney Inspection
Schedule a certified technician to inspect and clean your chimney before using your fireplace or woodstove. Even light creosote buildup can ignite quickly.
2. Burn Smart
Use only dry, seasoned hardwood. Burning damp or “green” wood produces more smoke and creosote. Never burn garbage, cardboard, or treated lumber — they can release toxic fumes and accelerate buildup.
3. Cap It and Keep It Clear
A chimney cap helps prevent rain, leaves, and animal nests from blocking airflow. Check it each fall to ensure it’s securely in place and free of obstructions.
4. Practice Safe Fireplace Habits
Always open the damper before starting a fire. Keep fires small and hot — large smoldering fires create more soot. Use a sturdy screen or glass door to stop embers from escaping.
5. Watch for Warning Signs
Unusual odors, poor drafting, or slow-burning fires can indicate a blockage or buildup. If you notice these, stop using the fireplace and call a professional immediately.
6. Install and Test Alarms
Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed on every level of your home and tested monthly. Replace batteries at least once a year.
A few simple steps now can prevent disaster later. For more fire safety information or help identifying hazards in your home, contact the Centre Hastings Fire Department at 613-473-4030 ext. 208.
