Council Establishes Position on Proposed High-Speed Rail Routes

The Municipality of Centre Hastings wishes to inform residents of a recent Council decision regarding the proposed ALTO High-Speed Rail Project.

Council had previously expressed support, in principle, for the concept of a potential station stop in Madoc, should the project proceed through the municipality. This position was intended to explore potential economic development opportunities while remaining subject to further review and alignment with municipal priorities.

Since that time, Council has undertaken a more detailed review of the proposed project, including both the southern and northern route options. Through this process, and with consideration of public feedback, a number of concerns have been identified. Residents have voiced important perspectives regarding the potential impact of the project on agricultural lands, existing infrastructure, environmental features, and the overall character and well-being of the community.

Council recognizes the significance of these concerns and the importance of responsible, informed decision-making when evaluating large-scale infrastructure proposals. Protecting local interests, supporting sustainable land use, and maintaining the quality of life for residents remain key priorities for the Municipality.

Council Resolution

At its meeting held on March 18, 2026, Council formally resolved the following:

  1. That Council does not support the ALTO high-speed rail project at this time, including both the southern and northern route options;
  2. That Council directs staff to cease any further advocacy efforts related to the project, including any promotion of a potential station stop in Madoc;
  3. That no additional municipal action be taken in support of, or in opposition to, the project unless otherwise directed by Council;
  4. That Council will continue to monitor the project and any future developments, and may revisit its position should new or updated information become available.

This decision reflects Council’s commitment to acting in the best interests of the community while ensuring that any future infrastructure considerations are carefully evaluated and aligned with local priorities.

The Municipality appreciates the input and engagement of residents on this matter and encourages ongoing participation in municipal decision-making processes.
