“After observing the weather warnings issues by Environment Canada, the Municipality of Centre Hastings is declaring a significant weather event in the municipality, as defined within the Minimum Maintenance Standards Regulation Ont. 239/02.  During the significant weather event, the Municipality of Centre Hastings is advising motorists, pedestrians, and residents to use extra caution as the municipality may not be able to meet its maintenance standards for roads and sidewalks due to strong wind gusts up to 70 km/h will combine with this heavy snow to cause significantly reduced visibility at times. The declaration will not change how or when the municipality performs its winter maintenance operations. However, it may take the municipality longer than usual to bring the roads and sidewalks back to a state of repair.  Public safety is the municipality’s top priority.  The Municipality of Centre Hastings will provide updates when the significant weather event has ended.

Recommended Action:

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Description:

Winter storm expected this evening to Saturday morning.

Hazards:

Heavy snowfall with total accumulations of 10 to 20 cm.

Peak snowfall rates of 3 to 5 cm per hour.

Strong wind gusts resulting in significantly reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Timing:

This evening to Saturday morning.

Discussion:

Snow is forecast to begin early this evening and will quickly become heavy at times, before transitioning to periods of rain tonight as temperatures rise to just above freezing. Strong southeasterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will combine with this heavy snow to cause significantly reduced visibility at times.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.
